What is Aquaculture?

Aquaculture is the farming of aquatic organisms in inland and coastal areas, involving intervention in the rearing process to enhance production, and the individual or corporate ownership of the stock being cultivated. In rural areas, agronomy, water management, aquaculture and wild aquatic resource harvesting are often physically and functionally integrated. In this way, aquaculture is an integral and indivisible part of the management of aquatic resources.

Global aquaculture production continues to grow at more than 10 percent annually, outpacing livestock and capture fisheries. Excluding aquatic plants, 60 percent of production comes from inland and 40 percent from coastal or marine areas. Farms in the Asia-Pacific Region contribute over 80 percent of the world’s aquaculture production, with China accounting for 50 percent of global production.

Sustainable Development

Sustainable development is the management and conservation of the natural resource base and the introduction of technological and institutional change to ensure continued supply of present and future human needs.

Such sustainable development conserves land, water, and plant and animal genetic material, is environmentally non-degrading, technically appropriate, economically viable and socially acceptable.

The Future

Outlook Resources is developing a plan to establish a sustainable fertilizer operation as the logical extension of its fish farming business in the bio-resources field. The Agassiz site just outside of Winnipeg has 160 acres and infrastructure suitable for the ERTH Solutions organic fertilizer technology and significantly, access to high quality sustainable organic input materials including the nutrient-rich waste from fish production. Additionally, Outlook plans to triple capacity of the Arctic Char operation.
